Sump Pump Insanity

There is nothing like finding water in the basement of your brand new home! When we moved in the backup sump pump alarm was activated. So after dealing with the insurance company, who sent out a repair tech, they replaced the main sump pump. Not even a week later during a thunderstorm the backup sump pump arm goes off . . .again.

So we go through the whole process all over again with the insurance company. But this time we find out that there is a hole in one of the sump pump pipes that was spraying water out of the pit and then the water is only circulating in the pit and not being pumped out. Solution - new check valve for the backup pump. Hopefully the alarm won't go off again!

Ahh the pleasures of home ownership - priceless!

  • Let me tell you about water in the basement....This spring our basement flooded 3 times. The first time we had 2ft of water. The cats woke us up most unhappy that they couldn't get to their food and their litter box was actually floating around the basement. We went out and bought a little pump and pumped the water out. We later found out that the house does have a sump pump (which we didn't know). The idoit previous owner wired the sump pump to the same electrical outlet as our well. The only problem with that is that the outlet only supplies power when the well is running, which it only does when we are running water.....
We are still unsure as to why the basement flooded. We think the previous owner did not run the drainage away from the house in one spot, so next spring we will be digging a hole in our side yard to fix the problem.

  • I do not envy you there. Water in the basement is one thing I haven't had to deal with. I have seen water dripping through the kitchen ceiling, water dripping through the basement ceiling, water overflowing from a toilet, and also water gushing from the trap of a sink where the trap suddenly disentegrated. So. We all have our water problems, I suppose. It's a homeowner cross to bear. Good luck!
